Phil Scores Well at Ontario Special Olympics
Shadow (Don & Bev) sent these photos of their son Phil, who some of us had the pleasure of meeting in Maine last September. Phil scored well at the events and Shadow sent this story and photos below:.
Phil wears his medals proudly...WAY TO GO PHIL
At the poduim (Phil in orange shirt under the flag)
Last summer Philip qualified for the Ontario Special Olympic Track &
Field finals which were held this past weekend in Niagara Falls . He and
about 800 other Special Olympic athletes from across the province had a
wonderful weekend and we thought we'd share the results with family and friends.
The two photos show Phil on the podium during the medal
presentations and then later with the two medals he won. He received a
Gold for the shot put (his best throw ever) and a Bronze for the 400
metre dash. He missed a Bronze in the 100 metre by just 12/100ths of a
second but he did run his best time ever. In the long jump he missed a
Bronze by 2 inches and a Gold by 4 inches (his usual jump is 8 inches
longer than the winning jump). In the 200 metre dash he was only a
fraction of a second off of a Bronze. The weather was very hot and
humid and thus very tiring for all of the athletes.
The opening and closing ceremonies, the completion of the Torch Run and lighting of the
Olympic Flame (which involved 7,000 police officers carrying the Torch
across the province over the previous few weeks), three days in
residence at Brock University and evening dinner dances have provided
him with memories that will last a lifetime. In light of this wonderful
experience, Phil is going to attempt to qualify for the next provincial
finals that will be held in 2009.
